I was a dental assistant for many years before entering dental school. During this time, I was able to see many styles of practice learning from multiple doctors all under one roof. The first office I worked for covered many dental services including IV Sedation, surgery, endodontics, orthodontics, and other general services. There were 8 dentists that rotated days at this office and each one had an interest in slightly different specialties of dentistry. Some were interested in surgery, some in ortho, and others in root canals. This practice style allowed patients to be seen without being referred out very often which was a great experience for me to be in those procedures.Upon graduating from dental school, I knew I wanted to provide a similar experience to my patients, with the blessing of my wife she allowed me to search for opportunities all over the nation to find the experience I would need to prepare myself for owning this style of practice. After many interviews, I felt confident I had found the experience I would need and that is how we landed in Cincinnati Ohio.
I grew up south of Salt Lake City, UT in the small farm town of Lehi. When I was twenty-one I started dental assisting as a hygiene assistant. From there I was able to gain a strong dental knowledge and work for many offices throughout my undergraduate years. My initial drive into dentistry was sparked once I met my beautiful wife. I knew that dentistry was the type of profession where not only could I provide for others the way I wanted to but also allow me to provide for a future family. Dentistry really attracted me in the sense that I could be a physician, a business owner, and a father with time to balance those things evenly.During my time as an undergraduate, I spent a lot of time in leadership and working with large organizations such as Henry Schein, 3M, and Patterson to host dinners for dentists, fundraising events, and to help gain experience for those in the pre-dental society at my university. While in college, I gained more leadership experience by joining the student government association and was able to help all of the pre-professional clubs on campus. One unique experience I was able to bring to the other organizations was a strong sense of networking within their careers. I helped the leaders of each organization expand their network and gain sponsorships with professionals and others in the community.I wish I could say that my transition from undergrad into dental school was easy. My wife and I had packed up and moved to Ohio, a state in which we knew not a single soul. We moved while my wife was 8 months pregnant and we were leaving behind the support of our friends and family. During the third week of school, my son was born and my whole world changed. In undergrad, it was easy to spend 15 hours per day on campus doing research and studying. Now I had a strong determination to spend as much time with my family as possible. I used this chance to propel me toward healthy life habits to help me better manage my time. Not long after my son was born I was voted in as the class president for my dental class, I was deeply honored with this and was able to continue in that role for the entirety of my four years at the college of dentistry. This leadership was different than the rest I had experienced, it seemed for once that my peers were having real-life struggles and situations they were facing. I was able to sit on many committees for large changes in our curriculum and other decisions affecting the operations at the school.Shortly before graduation my wife and I welcomed our second baby, this time a baby girl, and shortly after that the worldwide COVID pandemic hit. This brought a new variety of complications during my schooling. I was very fortunate that in my time at school, I was able to have completed my requirements nearly a year early and my school had a program that would allow me to work in Medicaid practices throughout Ohio during my time in school. While the clinics at my school were closed down, I was spending many days per week working for practices like Comfort Dental, FQHC, and other Medicaid-style offices. This was highly valuable for me, it gave me a real-life schedule to follow where I would see multiple patients per day, do hygiene exams, and see new patients. This was everything that dental school wasn't for my experience.Shortly after graduation, my family moved to Cincinnati Ohio and I took my first position as an associate. We welcomed our third child, another sweet baby girl. My time as an associate has been better than I could have ever imagined, the time and resources I had once wanted for my family have been something I cherish dearly. I have been able to find that balance I always wanted, being able to make it to dance recitals, baseball, and soccer games, and lots of time to do fun events with my wife and children. This year has been a big year of reflection for my wife and me, we have always lived near family and near the mountains and we both have had the strong feeling that it is time to go back to where we have the support of those we love around us. We have absolutely loved our time in Cincinnati, and we have loved growing from this experience but we both know it is time to head back to the mountains and to where we can enjoy our family time with our loved ones.My wife and I met snowboarding, we have both spent many years climbing, hiking, and spending time backpacking. These are experience we want to share with our children as they grow and get older.

I have been pushed and held accountable to take on a lot. I was certified to do IV moderate sedation as a fourth-year dental student and knew that was something I would like to offer my patients coming out of school. This has been extremely beneficial for full bony third molar extractions and difficult molar endo cases. Most of the patients I see during sedation appointments are patients who have avoided the dentist for many years due to fear. These patients are looking to maximize the amount of dentistry we could do in a single visit comfortably.
